Nuclear submarine NS1

This is a nuclear-powered strategic submarine featuring a water-jet propulsor and a fully electric power transmission system. It comprises a pressure hull designed to withstand high external pressure, a streamlined outer hull, ballast tanks, horizontal and vertical control surfaces, a central superstructure, and an aft propulsor. The submarine measures 170 meters in length and 13 meters in width, with a submerged displacement of 20,500 tonnes and a speed exceeding 20 knots; its armament includes 16 ballistic missile launch tubes. A nuclear reactor provides constant thermal power, which is transferred via a steam generator to turbogenerators that produce electricity for the main propulsion system and onboard systems. An electric motor is installed forward of the water-jet propulsor and drives an impeller housed within an enclosed duct. The water flow is accelerated by the impeller and exits through a nozzle, generating reactive thrust. The absence of a long mechanical drive train between the turbogenerators and the propulsor allows for the physical separation of the power generation units from the aft propulsion system, thereby reducing the transmission of mechanical vibrations. The water-jet propulsor is designed to generate the required thrust while meeting structural integrity and acoustic signature requirements. A battery buffer is employed between the generators and the traction motor to smooth out transient load fluctuations, enabling the reactor plant to operate in a more stable mode. This configuration integrates the nuclear power source, turbogenerators, battery system, electric transmission, and water-jet propulsor into a unified propulsion system that offers precise thrust control and minimizes the transmission of mechanical vibrations to the hull.
